Seiken Densetsu
Tree of Mana grows with the energy of Will of each and every thing on this world...
It grows high above the clouds in the air on top of Mount Illusia...
Legends tell that it will give eternal power to the one who touches it...
This here tells the story of Seiken Densetsu.
It's an action-RPG serie with real-time battles
like in Zelda but with multiple characters like in
Final Fantasy. So that means that you fight real-time with two or three characters. Fun!
Another difference with other RPGs are the graphics. Seiken Densetsu has its own style in graphics (that has been copied in other games like Chrono Trigger and Treasure Hunter G) with characters with the weirdest looks and clothes.
Can you remember?
That's how it all started.
In the beginning a simple action RPG in black and white on your gameboy, now a legend on it's own in three parts (soon to followed by a fourth part!) and one of the greatest RPG series in this world: Seiken Densetsu!
Another thing is the sound in Seiken Densetsu.
I think it's the greatest music ever heard in a role playing game yet, because it has, just like the graphics, its own style with weird flutes and stuff and, ofcourse, the snare of Mana.
Thanks to Hiroki Kikuta!
And now the history of the series:
The first in the series was
Final Fantasy Adventures
on the gameboy, as I said before, a simple action rpg in black and white. But it was picked up by lots of gamers all over the world, (even in Europe, where RPG gamers are an endangered species, so Greenpeace, you've got to protect me)
And Square decided to develop a sequel to Final Fantasy Adventures and they made
Seiken Densetsu 2 also known as Secret of Mana and was released on the SNES.
This game became even more popular because of the cool gameplay, greater music and a hell of a story. Everyone loved it, and even months after the release we still found it in the top 10 charts of best sold games. (sorry, I have no numbers)
Square knew what we wanted and started the next Seiken Densetsu project, but when it was released we waited and waited for a translation of the game that was simply called Seiken Densetsu 3 and all for nothing... It was never meant to be released outside Japan! And here we have Square's biggest mistake...
But that didn't stop me! I ordered an import game of Seiken Densetsu and played it in Japanese. And I can tell you that was the greatest thing that happend to me on a SNES! Choosing from six characters and the option to become Light or Dark (but I don't know WHAT the hell was going on in the game...) really is just a little taste of the total game!
And then, three years later we hear rumors about a new Square project for Seiken Densetsu...
Now we now these rumors where true and a new game in the series called Legend of Mana is being developed! And as far as I've heard it will be another two-player game released on the Playstation all in the same old Seiken Densetsu style! Let's all pray to our Lord and to Square that this game will be released outside Japan!
(And in Europe too pretty pretty please???)
Fwew!
What a tale!
Now let's get back to the first game
Secret of Mana
Darkness sweeps the troubled land
as Mana's power fade...
The people await a hero who will wield the sword
Excalibur, Herald, Gigas...
The sword has had many names,
for it has been celebrated in myths
and legends troughout time...
but all of these speak to just one weapon...
The Sword of Mana
Square's
The story is about a boy who accidently removes a sword from a stone wich protects his village.
Now that the sword is removed, the village is under attack. For this he gets kicked out of the village.
Later on he learns it is the Mana Sword he removed and that Mana is in danger, because the Empire wants to awaken the ultimate weapon to rule the world: The Mana Fortress.
Together with a girl and a little sprite they have to combine the eight Seeds of Mana with the Sword to regain the Sword's true power and beat the Empire and save the world.
On your way, you meet the Eight Elementals of Mana:
Undine, Gnome, Sylphid, Salamando, Shade, Lumina, Luna and Dryad who will help you on your way with magic.
Flammy, a dragon that lets you ride on his back. Jema, a knight from Tasnica who also fights the Emperor.
Watts the smith who is the only one that can forge the Mana Sword and many, many others.

As I said before, this is the best in the series yet.
It's about three power-seeking countries who all want to rule the world. To do this, they are trying to control Mana and it's in danger now.
Six children are driven away from home and are destined to save Mana.
Now let me tell you about the characters:
Duran
A swordman with long hair and a strange helmet and a shield. He comes from a town named Forthena where he used to serve the king.
Hawkeye
A thief with a pony-tale who fights with knives. He lives in Naba'al in the desert. His best friend is a cat named Nikita.
Kevin
He's a werewolf from a castle deep within the forest called Beast Castle. When it is night, Kevin transforms into a beast and fights with martial arts.
Angela
She's a sorceress and the best looking in the game.
She's a princess, spoiled and she's from Altena. She uses her staff as weapon.
Riesz
Another princess from Laurent high in the mountains.
She also uses magic and she's dressed in leaves.
She fights with a spear.
Charlotte
A blond elf-like girl. She comes from the holy city Wendale.
She fights with a morning star.
And now for Legend of Mana...
The latest in the series in the same great old style again!
Uhm.... Not much yet.
I've heard it will be a two player game and that you can expect oldies as Rabite and Mushboom who can fight along your side!
And also....
Luckily, I was also able to find some character pics from Legend of Mana, they're the ones with the white around 'em.
Be see'n ya!
Legend of Mana will be released in Japan on July 15th !!!
Or so it is said. But you know how it is...
Nothing is so unpredictable as a game's release.
But yet let's not lose hope.
And I still don't know if Legend of Mana will reach it to the US or Europe.
And to get a little taste of the game, here are some screenshots:
